When men should and shouldn't wear pink
A few years ago, I was required to wear a pink sweater as part of a promotion for work. It was the first time I had ever worn pink, and my initial thought was that it made me look like a bottle of Pepto Bismol. Although the pink sweater was a sartorial disaster of epidemic proportions, it made me wonder just what rules should apply in regards to men and the color pink.
Why is it that some men can pull off this color, while others can't? After several months of observation, I concluded that it is a matter of skin tone. It is not uncommon to see pink being worn by Hispanics or African-Americans. Other ethnic groups with darker skin tones, such as people from the Middle East or the Mediterranean, can also pull off pink. Not only is this true with pink, but it also applies to other pastel colors.
If you have a fair complexion, there is a good chance that you will look ridiculous in a pastel pink shirt. Fortunately, any guy can wear pink as long as they follow a few basic guidelines. Wearing the color pink is like consuming alcohol; it should only be done in moderation. Pink makes a wonderful accent color for both formal and casual wear. A pink tie with a white shirt and a black jacket looks downright dapper, whereas a a pink jacket or blazer will make you look like a Harlem pimp from the 70's. As a guy, you must be able to know how much pink is enough, and how much is over the top.
The easiest and safest way to introduce pink into your wardrobe is with stripes. A few pink stripes mixed in with other colors, like blue or gray, is a smart way to go. Pink is a perfectly acceptable color in a man's wardrobe, as long as it is worn with the right colors. A pastel pink shirt and black pants is acceptable, as is a pink shirt and grey pants. However, wear a pink shirt with khakis or denim, and you're just asking for trouble.
Another consideration when wearing pink is your body type. Pink is not a slimming color by any stretch of the imagination. If you're short and stocky, this certainly would be one color to avoid at all costs. Men who are tall and slender, on the other hand, will have no trouble wearing the color. Even if you have the right body type and complexion to wear pink, you should use good judgment in deciding when to wear pink.
Pink is a warm color that evokes pleasant feelings. This makes pink more acceptable to wear at a wedding than a funeral, for instance. Pink should be worn in the company of friends and family; it is not the type of color you would want to wear in court while standing in front of a judge. Pink is a great color for holidays, family gatherings, anniversaries, or a night out on the town with a special lady. It is not a good color for athletic wear, sporting events, or a trip to the local grocery store. Pink is not an everyday color, but like most things in life, it is alright in moderation.
