MOVING TO A NEW SITE

I have decided to move to a new blog.  Tired of this one because I had to type a long, long email add and an even longer password, causing me to give up by the time I reached the 15th character.  However, I do have to thank this blog for helping me and my students.

So, here is my new add:  http://linguistiklinguistics.blogspot.com/

PREMA LUCAS - Mrs Lucas's daughter and ex-TMGS

Cover Story: Pathfinder

2009/07/23
FARIDUL ANWAR FARINORDIN
faridulanwar@nst.com.my
FARIDUL ANWAR FARINORDIN finds out from Malaysian musician Prema Lucas if her departure for ‘greener’ shores a decade ago has been worth the journey — musically, and personally.
IT has been 10 years since singer/songwriter Prema Lucas left Malaysia hoping to find greener pastures in England.

Two years earlier, in 1997, she had released her eponymous debut and seemed rather content with her burgeoning career.

But later, when the already ailing music industry became even more weakened, leaving many disillusioned, Prema began to question her future as a musician here.

So she packed her bags and, armed with a one-way ticket, headed to London, only to face bigger hurdles. These shook her up, both emotionally and creatively.

Not much more was heard from her musically, until recently, when news about her second album generated a pleasant buzz on Facebook and MySpace.
I have always been passionate about
jazz, but never really had the courage to
incorporate its elements into my work, until I heard the seminal Herbie Hancock album Headhunters and in particular, the iconic track Chameleon. - Prema Lucas

In Fusion, recorded in New York, features legendary musician Wah Wah Watson on guitars (an original member of Motown Studio’s band The Funk Brothers and has worked with big names including Marvin Gaye, Janet Jackson, Alica Keys and also the late Michael Jackson for his Off The Wall album in 1979), renowned drummer Peter Erskine (who has played for Kate Bush and Manhattan Jazz Quartet), Luis Perdomo (keyboards), Bashiri Johnson (percussions), who has performed with Whitney Houstan, Madonna, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, and Peter’s nephew Damian (bass).

Having performed as a street busker during her university days in Australia (she graduated in Arts, majoring in History from Adelaide University) where she honed her musicality, Prema later had gigs at Jazz Cafe in London, which she believed opened new doors for her in music. Prior to the release of In Fusion, she set up her own record label MoreReverb.com and now plans are underway to her expand her artistic empire.

We caught up with Prema by email to find out how she’s doing and what she misses about KL.

Question: Congratulations on the release of In Fusion. It has been 10 years since you left Malaysia and this seems like a wonderful gift to yourself.

Answer:
Thank you so much! It really has been a dream come true to make this album. The way this project unfolded was amazing, and such an enriching experience. It is indeed a gift and I feel truly blessed and privileged to have been able to work with such inspiring musicians. I still get goosebumps each time I listen to the album!

Q: You had to do some “soul-searching” in London which eventually took 10 years. What did you discover along the way, before finding yourself again?

A:
When I first arrived in the United Kingdom, I wasn’t able to work (because of visa restrictions) and as a result, I was stripped of the one thing I had previously used to define myself.

So the question was, who was I without the music? I soon grasped the fact that beneath the music was the same soul, the same heart and the same personality and my music was a reflection of that, not the other way round!

Once I had established that fundamental truth, I could then work out what I wanted. Knowing the core of who I was led me to each subsequent step towards complete self-discovery; it was a natural progression.

Q: How many songs in In Fusion were written during that period of self-discovery? What about the other songs?
A: I wrote a great many songs during that period of which Destiny, Only Human and That Ain’t Love made it to the album. Most of the other songs were written in the last year that I had spent in Malaysia and the album covers the span of my life from around 1999 to around 2003.

Once I had selected the songs for the album, each of them went through a kind of metamorphosis and were re-developed and adapted to reflect who I am now.

So while they all began life at various stages, the songs came to fruition around the same time, during the pre-production stage.

Done that way, the album as a body of work really developed a strong sense of commonality; a collective, pieced together like chapters in a book.

Q: During the “trying” period, did it ever cross your mind to “hang up your guitar”?

A:
Well in a way, yes. I was frustrated because what I was doing musically wasn’t fulfilling.

This was mainly due to the fact that my music was in a state of evolution; I was in the process of re-inventing my ‘sound’ and at the same time also re-discovering myself; both are synonymous with each other.

But, as I found my footing personally, my music too began to take shape. The turning point for me musically came when I started to introduce the kind of chords I’d always loved into my songs.

Suddenly, everything fell into place; my singing, my writing and my arrangements.

I have always been passionate about jazz, but never really had the courage to incorporate its elements into my work, until I heard the seminal Herbie Hancock album Headhunters and in particular, the iconic track Chameleon.

That album played a part in my expansion as a songwriter. It showed me how jazz and funk, groove and improvisation, intellect and soul could all form an extraordinary union, and that gave me the impetus I needed to make the kind of music that my soul was crying out for!

Q: What kept you going at this time?

A:
It was the desire to create music; it is my calling. You know, I still remember the moment of epiphany. I was sitting on my balcony one evening, it was warm and balmy, and a strong realisation descended on me – ‘It is okay if I don’t make it huge and have the kind of success I’ve dreamt of before.

What I really want to do is to sing my songs and as long as I can continue doing that, then it’s absolutely fine by me. I just want to concentrate on making the best music I can make.’

And, just like that, the penny dropped. I was content to spend the rest of my life making music; writing and singing my best work. It was, as they say, ‘a light bulb moment’!

From that point on, I started listening to vast amounts of music of all genres and kept my life filled to the brim with outstanding, inspiring music — music was my focal point and it sustained me during this time.

Q: How did auditioning for Jazz Café in Camden lead you down a path of self-fulfillment?

A:
When I auditioned for the Jazz Cafe gig, all the healing had already taken place and I had come to the realisation that no matter what it took, I wanted to make music.

Although auditioning was a difficult thing to do because of pride (we artistes are a pretty sensitive bunch, really!), more than anything, I just wanted my music to be heard.

At the time, I felt sure that the audition was something I was meant to do and so gave it everything I had. It did, indeed, turn out to be a momentous gig, as the resulting show at the Jazz Café was where the seeds of In Fusion were planted.

The Jazz Cafe has always had a special place in my heart and playing there again really gave me the boost I needed to pursue my dream once again. You see, pretty much everything in this life happens for a reason!

Q: How would you describe your place in the London music scene now? How different is it to the time when you had arrived there, 10 years ago?

A:
I went through a phase of gigging in London but decided to pause while I worked on the album, which required my full attention.

Performance-wise, my music went down incredibly well in London. I’ve played at the Jazz Cafe quite a few times now and the audience has discerning tastes, so to have Londoners dancing and grooving to my original songs was most encouraging.

I think there is a real desire in London at this time, much more than 10 years ago, for original-sounding music.

The whole soul/funk/jazz scene continues to flourish and I’m really looking forward to promoting the album and starting to perform again in London.

Q: Now that you have secured the who’s who of legendary musicians on your speed dial, where are you going next with your artistry?

A:
Well, I really want to start performing ‘live’; touring with these amazing musicians would be such an incredible experience. It’s going to take some serious orchestrating to put this together, but I believe In Fusion deserves to be heard live with the same line-up who played on it.

I mean, just imagine the show: Wah Wah, Peter, Luis, Damian, Bashiri and some brilliant backup singers and yours truly on guitar and lead vocals... well, I tell you what, I can’t wait for it to happen!

Right now, we’re looking into the possibility of some shows in the States, Europe and eventually Malaysia, these things take time to come organise, but that’s definitely the next big step.

Q: Do you still keep in touch with your old buddies from KL? What have you learnt about the industry since you’ve been gone?

A:
Yes, I’m desperate to get back to KL and perform. It’s been too long! Besides, there are so many musicians whom I’ve worked with before so we definitely have to organise a giant jam session!

I still have a huge number of friends in KL and I do keep in touch with them, especially through Facebook, which is a fabulous way of reconnecting and staying in touch with mates overseas.

I have heard that there is a great ‘live’ scene in KL, which is brilliant as KL has such a plethora of talented musicians. I look forward to catching a few gigs when I’m back.

Q: Any plans to secure distributing rights for the release of the album in Malaysia? How are the fans going to get the album, since iTunes downloads are not available here?

A:
We’re in talks with a few labels for distribution, so hopefully the CD will be on the shelves soon.

We’ve just uploaded the album on Napster, Amazon, LimeWire and IMVU amongst others. We are also looking into a Malaysian online distribution store for digital download sales.

However, we do sell copies of the CD through my website (www.prema.net) and we are offering free postage till the end of September, so hopefully, we’ve covered all the bases so that everyone can get a copy of In Fusion.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your label MoreReverb.com?

A:
MoreReverb.com is a small record company with three employees, set up solely to promote me and this new album.

I have obviously worked with larger record labels in the past but it’s always been a dream of mine to own a record label.

So, when In Fusion was being planned, it seemed like the perfect time to set this label up.

I called it MoreReverb because if you ask anyone I’ve ever gigged with in KL, that’s all I ever wanted during sound check and gigs!

My ex-sound engineer Sunil Kumar will testify to this because I would constantly be asking, ‘Sunil, can I have a bit more reverb please?’

In future, I would like to produce albums for other artistes and eventually maybe even sign on a few acts. Until such time though, MoreReverb.com is happy to be a one-act label!

Places where colonial names are very much in use

Places where colonial names are very much in use

2010/03/21

A FIRST-TIME visitor to Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah in George Town would be perplexed to find how many names it has.
Reputed to be one of the nicest roads in the city, it was once known as "Millionaire's Row" because businessmen who made their fortunes at the turn of the century built their mansions there.

Kedah House, on the seafront facing the North Channel, is also found here.

The tree-lined promenade has officially been known as Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah since the early 1980s.

However, just like many other streets in Penang, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah is better known by its original name, Northam Road, among most locals and Ang-mo-lo among the Chinese-speaking residents.

Try telling a taxi driver that you want to go to Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah and you'll probably get a blank stare or a typical "where ah?" question. But say Northam Road and he'll get you there in the blink of an eye.

It can be a long and infuriating search by car or taxi if one is looking for a particular street in Penang, especially if one does not know the road's original name.

As most streets in the city were built and named during the colonial era, the historic English names have remained in the psyche and are still used by most Penangites.

This is unlike many other cities in the country where colonial street names have been replaced.

However, even where street names have been officially changed, locals have largely continued to use the old names. This is where the confusion sets in for visitors.

Take the case of Jalan Masjid Negeri, which is better known as Green Lane among locals, or Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling which is more commonly referred to as Pitt Street.

Then, there is Jalan D.S. Ramanathan which was originally known as Scott Road.

Adding to the intrigue of these Mat Salleh road names, is how the local Chinese refer to the streets in Hokkien.

Macalister Road is known as Tiong-lo, Burma Road is Chhia-tsui-lo, Jalan Gurdwara or Brick Kiln Road is Hong-chhia-lo, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah or Northam Road is Ang-mo-lo, Jalan Bagan Jermal is Oan-to-lo and Jalan Residensi is Ji-ong-chhu-lo).

Taxi driver H.S. Tee, who has been ferrying passengers since the early 1990s, said most Penangites were fond of using colonial street names compared with the official ones.
Northam Tower bears the old name of Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah. In the

Northam Tower bears the old name of Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah. In the foreground is the Shih Chung School.
He said this was also the case for the older generation who preferred using the Hokkien names.

"That is why I find it easier taking passengers who refer to their guide books as they more often than not, refer to the colonial names of roads compared with Malaysians from outside Penang.

"Sometimes, I have to stop and think hard when passengers give me the official street name before I can figure out where they want to go."

While most may ask what's in a name in Penang, it looks like it certainly makes a difference between a short efficient ride to the destination or an agonising search through the streets of George Town.

Teachers plan demo over irrelevant workload

SEREMBAN: Teachers are considering holding a nationwide demonstration if the Education Ministry does not reign in overzealous state education department heads and headmasters who burden them with “irrelevant work”.
They claim to have reached “near breaking point” and left with no choice but to hold a demonstration so that the higher-ups would take note of their plight.
The decision was taken by National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) delegates during a three-day meeting which ended here yesterday. There are some 350,000 teachers in service.
Its president Lt Cdr (Rtd) Hashim Adnan said teachers’ were now reduced to mere reporters rather than allowed to focus on teaching.
“We are tasked to do reports after reports, action plans and working papers; most of which are totally irrelevant to our work. I must say this has affected the quality of teaching and the victims are the students,” he told The Star.
Hashim said state department heads never sought their views and would bulldoze whatever programme they wanted introduced in schools.
It is understood that the proposal to demonstrate was made by delegates from several states which did not even have one student in the top 10 of last year’s SPM results announced on Thursday.
“We are mostly doing clerical work in schools and among our duties include collecting irrelevant data, attending courses, organising programmes and doing correspondence work.
“Also, since some schools were now Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi, we are required to do plenty of documentation work every day ... we are unable to focus in class,” Hashim said.
He said teachers were also unhappy with the Government over a proposal to transfer senior teachers to rural schools.
The delegates want the ministry to hire more male teachers to check the problem of indiscipline in schools.
Teachers were also unhappy as headmasters did not notify them of their appraisal at the end of the year. This had jeorpadised their chances for promotion.

Tunang Beng Hock lahirkan bayi lelaki

PUTRAJAYA 22 Feb.
Bagaimanapun, Pegawai Perhubungan Awam Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN), Jainisah Mohd.

Kesopanan bahasa jati diri 1Malaysia

Setiausaha Agungnya, Ahmad Shah Mohd.

- Bernama

pink again!!!!!

Men in the pink

Men wearing pink clothes

By Finlo Rohrer
BBC News Magazine

A pressure group wants parents to resist buying pink toys for girls this Christmas. But the colour isn't just controversial for girls - men are only just getting over their fuchsia phobia and for boys pink really does stink.

If you're a typical little boy, pink is viewed as girly, effeminate, unmasculine, and, in short, to be avoided.

And yet, a strange thing seems to happen to the modern British boy when they reach adulthood. Pink no longer seems to be so rigidly associated with female dress.

In many areas of British life, like the City, pink shirts are seen as normal workwear. Pink ties are normal. Even pink socks make an appearance.

Boy in pink shirt
There are men who are comfortable in pink who would not dress their sons in pink

And it's not just in finance. Pink is a classic colour for polo shirts. On everyone from mods in Fred Perry, to those who model their dress on football "casuals", pink is not seen as fundamentally feminine.

The colour is currently popular in both high fashion and the High Street, says Robert Johnston, associate editor of GQ magazine.

"We have all grown up a bit. Pink is a flattering colour. This season there are a lot of pastels for men - a lot of those will be pink. Women like men in pink."

To take one example, 5% of shirts sold by the English shirtmaker Turnbull & Asser, based in London's Jermyn Street, are pink. "It is one of the default choices," says buyer Charles O 'Reilly.

Pink hasn't always been acceptable for men.

"We have come a long way even compared with 20 years ago," says Johnston. "Pink was the last taboo colour-wise."

PINKSTINKS CAMPAIGN
Running for 18 months
Currently targeting Early Learning Centre
Activists argue that while a wide variety of boys' toys are available, those for girls are often predominantly pink

"If you look at places like Jermyn Street and Savile Row you will see pink," says Bronwyn Cosgrave, author of Costume & Fashion: A Complete History. " It is historic."

So the story of pink clothing acceptance isn't as simple as a recent innovation.

"Men, for centuries up to the dawn of the 20th Century, were far more elaborately dressed than women," says Ms Cosgrave. In the era of the dandy - the late 18th Century - pink wasn't that unorthodox for a man.

"There was a great sobering effect with the dawn of the Wall Street and City culture - men have gone to work in the last 100 years in pinstripes and white shirts."

There were exceptions. "Douglas Fairbanks and Cary Grant - immensely important in popularising modes of male dress - wore pink shirts and sweaters," says Ms Cosgrave.

In the 1960s and 1970s the influence of the counterculture on dress also began to loosen things up, she argues.

Quentin Tarantino gazes at Brad Pitt's pinkish suit
Pastel tones are apparently 'in' right now

Colour consultant Angela Wright concurs. "Until about 40 or 50 years ago, men did not show their feminine side at all. They were required to be strong and ultra masculine the whole time, so pink was out.

"There was little doubt in anyone's mind that a man wearing pink was definitely suspect. When the pace of evolving attitudes increased, around the same time as homosexuality between consenting adults was legalised, the strong demarcation lines between the sexes began to blur."

Even the idea that pink is a colour particularly associated with homosexuality doesn't bear out.

"Gay men don't actually appear to feel the need to stress that side of themselves in their dress," says Ms Wright, of consultancy firm Colour Affects. "It is more a case that society does that for them, by, for example, naming their purchasing habits 'The Pink Pound'."

Certain tailors, like Richard James and Ozwald Boateng, are associated with the use of flamboyant colours. And traditionalists have also beat a path.

Woman with pink shirts and blouses
Dress became less conservative in the 1960s and 1970s

"Thomas Pink really did legitimise men flaunting pastel shades such as pink and lavender," says Ms Cosgrave.

After the austerity of the middle years of the 20th Century, fashion has come back to the point where wearing pink would be seen as nothing more than flamboyant, or having certain "preppy" or upper class connotations.

"It has got that Ivy League, slightly public school [connotation], you think of posh boys, sweaters round their shoulders," says Johnston.

"The gender separating of colours of clothing is more or less over."

Perhaps the strangest thing is that the bar against pink for boys persists. The very same men who are happy to wear a pink polo shirt might think twice about dressing a 10-year-old boy the same way.

"I remember when I was a kid little boys would throw away pink felt tips [from a set]."

Golfer in pink shirt and shoes
Pink no longer undermines a man

It has been noted, not least by the sceptic Ben Goldacre while attacking research on the subject, that the pink/blue split was not always as it is today.

He cited the Ladies' Home Journal from 1918 saying: "There has been a great diversity of opinion on the subject, but the generally accepted rule is pink for the boy and blue for the girl. The reason is that pink being a more decided and stronger colour is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl."

So the mystery of why people will not dress boys in pink persists.

Here is a selection of your comments.

When I had my son a few years ago I was annoyed by the lack of imagination shown by manufacturers when it came to buying clothes and toys - most items for a boy are blue while girls are pink. Personally I hate baby blue and pink! The older members of my family rigidly stuck to this idea that a boy should only be in blue with one commenting after I had him wrapped in a cosy pink blanket, "He'll turn into a pansy if he's in pink". In a deliberately rebellious move on my part, I bought my son a pink T-Shirt in the summer which had "Tough Enough to Wear Pink" written on it. I've tried to encourage a range of colour in my son's life and not just one boring blue.

The French rugby club Stade Francais in 2005 decided to try and shock the rugby community by introducing a pink away strip.
Terry, Chicago

As a little girl I loathed pink, especially when my parents painted my room that colour. To this day it makes me physically ill. I'm not so sure about men wearing pink. I much prefer darker colours on them to bring out their colouring or their eyes. A nice pastel green or blue on a man is very nice, especially with a nice co-ordinating tie, but to me pink makes a man look "frilly" and I prefer my man to look and dress like a man.

Whether you like him or loathe him (I fall into the former camp, I admit), one chap who wears pink quite often is Jeremy Clarkson. There's certainly nothing "dainty" or "pretty" about him! I've noticed one particular pink and white check number that has appeared on Top Gear so many times, it should be getting its own residuals...
Wyvern, London, UK

I think there is still a north/south divide on this issue. The men up here do not wear pink so readily as this article suggests! Give it a few years yet.

There's a big difference between a masculine-looking bloke wearing pink (as I now do) and an androgenous boy (as I was) wearing pink. I remember well the ire of being being mistaken for a girl at a younger age. The last thing I needed then was to have worn pink.
Mike Rigby, Taunton, Somerset

Pink used to be very much a man's colour some decades ago. And when we visited the Carnival in Venice a few years ago, there was an elderly gentleman in a beautiful pink frock coat and breeches - he looked refined and magnificent!
Max McKean, Shiplake-on-Thames, Oxon, England

Our trading floor has "pink shirt Thursday" - so your article is timely. The trading floor is like a river of pink. And yes, we have pink socks on too!
Alastair, Tring, Herts

I have yet to see a man who looks good in pink! It really is an effeminate colour that seldom looks good on women! Please let men be real men and dress accordingly. There is nothing more depressing than seeing a guy being dragged around a clothes shop with a partner in hand insisting that they look fantastic in a horrendous pink shirt!
Victoria Nesbitt, Oxford

I've no objection in principle to men wearing pink, but all the examples illustrated in this article are hideous, especially that pink jacket with a grey cravat... *shudder*.
Ian Sutherland, Edinburgh

My 10 year old son still does throw pink pens and pencils away because they're girlie. As for why I won't even try to dress him in pink? A) he'd never speak to me again (or at least until he was hungry enough or wanted money) and B)his favourite colour is black, which doesn't show the dirt and washes well.
Anon, Lancashire

Mystery!? I've got one word for you. Bullying. Adults may have moved on but kids will be kids. Single your little boy out by making him wear pink and the bullies have found their new target. Hardly rocket science

When men should and shouldn't wear pink

A few years ago, I was required to wear a pink sweater as part of a promotion for work. It was the first time I had ever worn pink, and my initial thought was that it made me look like a bottle of Pepto Bismol. Although the pink sweater was a sartorial disaster of epidemic proportions, it made me wonder just what rules should apply in regards to men and the color pink.

Why is it that some men can pull off this color, while others can't? After several months of observation, I concluded that it is a matter of skin tone. It is not uncommon to see pink being worn by Hispanics or African-Americans. Other ethnic groups with darker skin tones, such as people from the Middle East or the Mediterranean, can also pull off pink. Not only is this true with pink, but it also applies to other pastel colors.

If you have a fair complexion, there is a good chance that you will look ridiculous in a pastel pink shirt. Fortunately, any guy can wear pink as long as they follow a few basic guidelines. Wearing the color pink is like consuming alcohol; it should only be done in moderation. Pink makes a wonderful accent color for both formal and casual wear. A pink tie with a white shirt and a black jacket looks downright dapper, whereas a a pink jacket or blazer will make you look like a Harlem pimp from the 70's. As a guy, you must be able to know how much pink is enough, and how much is over the top.

The easiest and safest way to introduce pink into your wardrobe is with stripes. A few pink stripes mixed in with other colors, like blue or gray, is a smart way to go. Pink is a perfectly acceptable color in a man's wardrobe, as long as it is worn with the right colors. A pastel pink shirt and black pants is acceptable, as is a pink shirt and grey pants. However, wear a pink shirt with khakis or denim, and you're just asking for trouble.

Another consideration when wearing pink is your body type. Pink is not a slimming color by any stretch of the imagination. If you're short and stocky, this certainly would be one color to avoid at all costs. Men who are tall and slender, on the other hand, will have no trouble wearing the color. Even if you have the right body type and complexion to wear pink, you should use good judgment in deciding when to wear pink.

Pink is a warm color that evokes pleasant feelings. This makes pink more acceptable to wear at a wedding than a funeral, for instance. Pink should be worn in the company of friends and family; it is not the type of color you would want to wear in court while standing in front of a judge. Pink is a great color for holidays, family gatherings, anniversaries, or a night out on the town with a special lady. It is not a good color for athletic wear, sporting events, or a trip to the local grocery store. Pink is not an everyday color, but like most things in life, it is alright in moderation.

pink for men 2;)

Of Course Real Men Wear Pink!

Why can't men wear pink? It's a color, women wear blue. Any man who wants to exercise his freedom of expression can wear any color he wants. Many people say pink is a feminine color and wearing pink automatically makes a man look weak or of a certain sexual orientation. Hmmmm....I would say that is a close-minded attitude. You may have your own opinion and I invite you to participate in the duel on this lens.

Many people are of the thought that a man wearing pink shows he is confident and comfortable. I think it shows that he is going to do what he wants no matter what other people say or think. He is not going to have society telling him what he can and can't wear. If he wants to wear pink then so be it!

pink for men?????

Why real macho men are proud to wear pink

What is it about men and pink clothes? As soon as a man reveals a liking for them, the rumours start to fly that he's a bit too keen on musical theatre, if you know what I mean.

The new Oxford English Dictionary even defines pink to mean 'of or associated with homosexuals', as in 'the pink pound'.

The latest victim of this colour prejudice is Peter Spencer, Sky's political correspondent - the one with the mane of white hair, given to expansive hand gestures - who often appears on telly at the weekends.

Brad Pitt wears a pink suit
David Beckham wears a pink scarf

In the pink: Brad Pitt wears a blush coloured suit at the Cannes Film Festival and David Beckham teams his masculine biker jacket with a pink scarf to soften the look

He likes to wear a cloak over pink shirts and ties, and even has a pink BMW, and two pink houses, in north London and Cornwall. Yet Spencer is very much a ladies' man.

The camp connotations come from the fact that for much of the 20th century pink has been considered a girl's colour, as favoured by Barbie. But if you look back a bit further, it was considered strong and manly, while blue (associated with the Virgin Mary) was seen as delicate and feminine.

To this day, the strapping male rowing teams at Westminster School wear a fondant-fancy coloured kit; legend has it that they had to beat their arch-rivals Eton in a race in 1837 for the privilege of wearing the fashionable colour.

The link between pink and ebullient masculinity has, in some quarters, persisted.

When I was a banker in the mid-Nineties at merchant bank Flemings, I was told on my training course not to wear a pink shirt for fear of looking too flash.

In other words, the opposite of the pretty-in-pink, girly-man cliche held true: a little splash of pink was thought far too red-blooded and testosterone-rich.

(I wonder what they're wearing in the City these days - something in an eye-catching shade of sackcloth and ashes perhaps?)

The same robustly macho associations go for pink handkerchiefs and socks; and I mean screaming bubblegum pink, rather than the dark red, discreet version.

Lurid pink accessories imply a certain type of devil-may-care dandiness - and that's Rex Harrison/Prince Philip/Errol Flynn dandiness, by the way, not the John Inman/Noel Coward variety.

Full-throttle pink outfits, however, are best left to Hollywood pretty boys such as Brad Pitt.
